Japanese Soy Sauce Bottles

Dejima Island (Japan), 1700s

Two porcelain soy sauce bottles inscribed with the words "Japanschzoya” and “Soya,” originating from Dejima Island.

 

Under strict trade conditions imposed by the Japanese rulers, the VOC was only allowed to operate from Dejima, a small artificial island (120m x 75m) in Nagasaki harbour.
